did you beta it? I've been reading some pretty poor early reviews

Yeah a lot of people I know that have played it are all saying it's pretty bad, and an abomination of the Elder Scrolls Series. ;D

It's not Skyrim but it's the same lore and background.  I enjoyed the parts I played, but the 5-6 hot-keyed abilities is a bit limiting.  The graphics are darn nice and I ran around without rubber banding or lag-locking even at peak times.  However, there were some annoying bugs that hopefully get resolved before it goes live.  Nothing really made it stand out against the other MMOs and seemed sort of generic in that regard.  That being said, the questing (what little they activated) seemed more organic than others and it is all voiced over which added to the immersion.  Certain crafts seemed a bit more severe than others (out-leveled your craft rapidly) and most were finder/gatherer dependent.  Never got to try a group dungeon but hoping they have another beta test so I can.  In the 3 days (nearly full-time) I was able to level a char to 16 so leveling does not seem that difficult, at least at the starting areas.

I haven't really decided yet on subbing, but I'm leaning towards it.

I just really like the way the game looks. I am also looking at Everquest Next but it looks too cartoony. A fellow G+ user went to SOE live and told one of the devs that, and he said it looked like he had slapped his mother in the face. I want a more real looking game. I'm open to suggestions. I also can't wait to be able to talk about ESO like normal people :P

The Elder Scrolls Online is currently in closed beta... they're stress testing, but there is still an NDA in place, so I can't really talk about whether I'm in it, or what I think of it.

Instead, let me tell you about these chocolate chip cookies I tried. I've had chocolate chip cookies before, and I liked them well enough... but I didn't think this particular recipe was any good. They certainly looked like chocolate chip cookies, but they didn't really taste a whole lot like chocolate chip cookies. Something about them was just... off.

I don't know, maybe if I absolutely, head-over-heel loved chocolate chip cookies, I would have liked this recipe better. Maybe I'm just not a big enough fan of chocolate chip cookies to begin for me to overlook the weird taste of this recipe. Overall I guess it just felt like this recipe was trading entirely on the established chocolate chip cookie name, rather than trying to be delicious all on its own. And so ultimately these cookies bring nothing new to the table, and everything they do, other cookies already do better.

Now, to be fair, this particular recipe is pretty new... perhaps not even quite finished yet. So I did take that into account when tasting the cookies. However, ultimately, when you put certain ingredients together in a certain way, it's pretty clear the kind of cookie you're going to get, and nothing short of major alterations will change the resulting taste. There comes a point when the baker has clearly committed to a certain concoction, and a pinch of salt here or a couple of extra minutes in the oven won't help.

Of course, recipes can evolve and change over enough time, and perhaps eventually the baker will tweak and adjust the ingredients to create something special. And I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that will just gobble these cookies up regardless. I personally just think they're bland, and not worth the asking price.

NDA has been lifted!!! Now we can stop talking in riddles. At least I am anyway, maybe some of you other guys like it.
That being said, so far what I have seen I liked. No its not Skyrim or the other Elder Scrolls games, but I think I'll still enjoy it. I am still leaning heavily on getting the game so I look forward to seeing anyone else here that might be picking it up as well. I know not all of you like what you see, but not everyone likes the same thing.

I really wanted to like this game. I wanted to find a reason to buy it. But I think ESO is just not a very good game. As an MMO it doesn't do anything different from what we've already seen before. It's decent enough but it's rather bland.It's a vanilla flavoured ice cream. It's not bad and it's ice cream, but there are better flavours. If solid but unremarkable MMO's are your kind of MMO, LOTRO is better. (and F2P)

ESO also fails as an Elder Scrolls game, imo. It lacks the freedom you expect from an Elder Scrolls game. It's a RPG on rails. And the fact that you, the lone hero and saviour of the world, are waiting with 25 other once-in-a-generation heroes to beat the same boss mob breaks all immersion. I also don't like the writing. I have a strong tolerance for bad writing and I read all quest text in all the games I play, but ESO is the first time in years I just clicked through everything.

Had it been a GW kind of deal where you only need to buy the box and you get to play as much as you want, I probably would have bought it. (I would have bought the Imperial Edition too, because I want the Emperors Guide to Tamriel) Playing ESO is bearable in small doses, spread out over enough time. But at 55 for the game + subscription, no way. It's not nearly good enough to pull off the subscription model.

So now that the NDA is lifted I'm going to call my bookie to get the over-under on F2P by November. I'm betting under btw.

I'm curious, what do you consider "remarkable" and what could they have done to make it so?  How many successes have there been in taking a franchise from solo play to MMO (have there even been any that have tried)? 

In my opinion if someone goes into an MMO expecting solo play, they are doomed to disappointment.  The solo hero model embraced in Skyrim is sorely incompatible with the necessities of an MMO.  Perhaps they should have made every "savior of the world" quest occur in a personal instance as not to break that immersion.  I disagree with the RPG on rails statement though.  I felt I was free to explore and found quests wherever I went... up until I was unable to leave the newb areas (lvl 1-15ish).

To me there are only so many ways to skin a cat.  Gather x items, kill x mobs, close x portals, gain x exp, go to x locations, solve x puzzles, etc.  Even ice cream can melt and get moldy regardless of the flavor.  As the saying goes, familiarity breeds contempt.

I'm still holding out on my decision to subscribe based on upcoming beta testing.  Hopefully the full game will be accessible and I'll be able to see/test other things like group dungeons.  PvP doesn't float my boat so I'm not likely to try alliance stuff.

To me remarkable is SWG and WoW when they came out. Remarkable like A tale in the desert, the Secret World,  MXO, EVE, Earth and Beyond etc. etc. I might not have liked all of them, but at least they tried to do something different, tried to innovate. ESO doesn't even try while it desperately needed to, considering its pedigree.

I agree with you that the solo hero model embraced in previous Elder Scrolls games is sorely incompatible. That's exactly my point. Imho this means they shouldn't have tried to implement that model in an MMO, or at the very least they should have tried to give a convincing in character explanation of why there are suddenly dozens of heroes running around. Ignoring that element and hoping I wouldn't notice won't work. Since they didn't address it at all, it's exactly because all other ES games where so focused on the lone hero element, that it feels weird in an MMO.

You are right that not many franchises went from solo to MMO successfully. That should have made Zenimax think about how they were going to do this address that issue and I don't feel they have given that much thought. 

I don't think you have much freedom in ESO. You need to finish the main quests on the first 2 islands  before you even get to the main continent and after that you need to find and finish all the quests in that area before you can go explore the next area with any chance of success. It's a valid design choice that pretty much all MMO's make, but let's not pretend it's the only way to do it. And it's certainly not what the Elder Scrolls games are about.

Again, I'm not saying it's a bad game, not at all. It's a decent game, but if you charge 55,- plus subscription, decent isn't nearly good enough. 10 years ago, maybe. But today you need to either make the next WoW in terms of innovation and mass appeal, or a  game that's not anything like WoW and appeals to an entirely different crowd. They did neither. They just did what others did before them and hope this time will be different. Apparently without giving much thought about the history of the IP they were working with or the market they are trying to enter.

I really wanted to like the game. The comparison to LOTRO wasn't an insult - I have a life time subscription to LOTRO -  I only used the comparison to explain what I meant by vanilla MMO.

You know, after I read this, I got to thinking about my old LOTRO days.  I was a pre-order and lifetime subscriber.  I did enjoy it quite a bit, but didn't know anyone else playing so I had a hard time sticking with it, and kept playing AO most of the time.  I haven't logged in oh in probably 2 years, but checked in on the website the other day and saw you could buy a boost to level 50 for your characters for a limited time.  I don't know how much they cost in Turbine Points, but I'm sure I have thousands upon thousands of Turbine points since old lifetime subbers get a free stipend of points every month.  Might have to pop back in and boost a couple characters to 50 and check it out again.  I hear they revamped combat a little and put talent trees in this last expansion.
